Plastic Free Wānaka’s Waste Free Shopping Tips

Shopping in Wānaka? Not sure where to start? We've got you!

Whether you’re looking for clothes or groceries, any shopping trip can become stressful, especially if you’re trying to do your bit for the planet. To reduce stress and ensure you have an enjoyable time, we’ve rounded up our favourite tips for a smooth waste free shopping experience.

Shop second hand first (when you can)

We know it’s not always possible, but it’s surprising just how much you can find in Wānaka’s op shops. Not only does second hand shopping reduce carbon emissions and packaging, but it can also save you tons of money. Plus, it’s such a great feeling when you find something you’ve been looking for.

Plan ahead

Take stock of your household and make a list of everything you need beforehand. Use this guide to find out where to go and jot it down to save time. This way, you’ll be able to locate exactly what you need without spending hours rummaging through every shop in Wānaka (unless you want to, of course).

BYO reusable containers

If you’re shopping in Wānaka, you’ll notice many refillable stations – even at the supermarkets. To make the most of bulk bin shopping, bring your own reusable containers. You can also do this for delis, eateries and butchery counters (the staff are well accustomed to this in Wānaka so don’t be shy!) Look out for the Wastebusters BYO stickers and posters, welcoming you to bring your own container. If you don’t have any at home, reuse a glass jar from your pantry.

Rethink single-use

While society is becoming more accustomed to choosing plastic-free packaging, it’s also important to look at the bigger picture. Even though paper bags can be recycled, they still have an impact on our environment. From manufacturing to transportation (and even recycling itself), paper bags also rely on energy and materials.

The solution? Instead of plastic-free, think ‘single-use free’. Choose a reusable option whenever possible. If that’s not possible, find a way to reuse it.

Bulk-buy

Buying bulk reduces packaging and saves money. You can often find better quality products, compared to what’s available on the shelf. With bulk buying, you can also choose the exact quantity you need which reduces food waste in your household.

Put quality first

From toys to handbags, we recommend choosing high quality products over cheaper items that are more likely to break. While this is not always financially viable, it will offer value for money in the long run. It’s the difference between a bag that lasts a lifetime and one with broken straps every year.

Now that’s what we call waste free shopping!
